Under the theme of Re: Start, KICB 2021 looks at the past of the ceramic biennale and roles and meanings of ceramic art in the post COVID-19 era, and aspires to deliver messages of consolation and hope to those tired of COVID.
The exhibitions of KICB 2021 to be held under the biennale theme Re: Start feature works of ceramic art in various genres, from sculptures that address the pandemic, climate change, and the rapid change in society and the environment to media art and installations. It intends to revitalize the stagnant culture and art world, which are suffering from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. In so doing, this biennale will be a forum that shows the limitless possibilities of ceramic art for development.
The International Competition, the main exhibition of the KICB, presents 76 works, which were selected through screening of entries by 1,184 artists from some 70 countries. These works were selected for the insights into the global crisis by artists who are seeking the direction of contemporary ceramics by communing with diverse media. Other exhibitions include KICB2021 Guest Country Exhibition, A Story Beyond the Sea: Dutch Ceramics Now showing contemporary ceramics from the Netherlands, Tip Toland: Fairy Tale, the invitational exhibition of the Grand Prize winner of KICB 2019, an exhibition for children and exhibition about blue-and-white porcelain.
Adapting to fast-changing times, the Online Platform of KICB presents live exhibitions, a symposium, events, and an online special exhibition. Through the Online Platform, the KICB aspires to suggest a new paradigm of exhibitions and symposium of the Biennale for the post COVID-19 era so that anyone can enjoy the art anytime, anywhere.
